Overview

What is Angina (chest Pain)?

Angina is the sensation of chest aching or discomfort produced when the heart does not allow an acceptable force of oxygen-rich blood to flow. Owing to this fact, the heart may raise its rate and intensity of condensation to get more blood, causing noticeably painful symptoms. Importantly, it is of great concern that Angina is not a disease per se but a symptom and indicator of underlying heart disease.

Angina affects about 10 million people in the United States alone. So, you can be sure that you are certainly not the only one experiencing such a symptom. Getting to know Angina, its causes, and powerful techniques for overseeing it in regular daily existence is fundamental.

How does it feel to have Angina?

Angina may present many signs and symptoms, the most common being chest pain or discomfort. You may feel it under the breastbone and experience stinging, crushing, or strained sensations more frequently. It can also cause pain in your arms, jaw, neck, shoulders, or even back.

Angina is usually described as a dull ache or a heavy feeling in your chest, unlike stabbing pains. It can also cause shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and fatigue. Some describe angina pain as similar to indigestion but rarely relieved by antacids.

What are the different types of Angina?

There are four basic types of Angina, all presenting with different causation and pattern of symptoms.

  1. Stable Angina
  2. Angina instability
  3. Angina microvasculitis
  4. Variant angina (Prinzmetal angina)

What are the symptoms of Angina?

Angina is chest pain caused by decreased blood flow to the heart muscle. It is a sign, not a complaint in itself, and often serves as a prodrome or a warning symptom of underlying coronary artery disease (CAD).

Symptoms of Angina-

Chest pain or anxiety: The most common symptom is this:

  • Weakness, squeezing, or pressure
  • Aching, burning, or fullness
  • That may be felt in the arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, back, or belly

Pain is mild: Typically, it is perceived only as a dull ache or a heavy feeling in the chest. Other associated symptoms with Angina include shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and fatigue.

What causes Angina?

A lack of oxygen-rich blood reaching the heart muscle is the primary cause of Angina. This may be caused by CAD:

Angina is primarily a result of this. Adipose deposits (Pillars, accumulate inside the coronary artery, constricting the passage and restricting the inflow of blood into the heart.

  • Coronary spasm: This is a temporary constriction of the coronary arteries that can even reduce blood inflow.
  • Microvascular Angina: It develops when the smaller vessels in the heart become diseased and prevent blood from coming into them.

How is Angina treated?

Your doctor will treat the underlying cause of your Angina by taking action at its origin to address the problem in your heart. The overall objectives of the treatment are to enhance blood flow in your heart and reduce the risk of potential complications. To help your doctor understand your condition and find out what the best approach for treatment is, he or she will examine you and conduct a few tests on you.

Treatment usually includes the following:

  1. Anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs to lower the risk of blood clots.
  2. Blood pressure information.
  3. Cholesterol information.
  4. Drugs prescribed tailored to manage Angina.
  5. Lifestyle modifications.
  6. CABG, or coronary artery bypass grafting.
  7. PCI, also known as coronary angioplasty and stenting.
  8. Some can even continue experiencing Angina even when treated.

In similar cases, your provider may give you a medication to open your blood vessels for you during pain episodes. Nitroglycerin is one of the most common medications used to treat Angina.

EECP is an individual exercise to help patient living with Angina to pass his or her pain. A pressure on your lower legs in such treatment may ease out the signs of Angina.
