Overview

What is Aortic Valve Stenosis?

Aortic valve stenosis (aortic stenosis) occurs when the aortic valve in your heart becomes narrowed or blocked. This blocks the normal inflow of blood from your heart, which can lead to heart damage and serious health problems. Because this condition restricts blood inflow, it also restricts your body's oxygen force. This can cause chest pain, briefness of breath, and fainting.

What are the symptoms of Aortic Stenosis?

Aortic stenosis often progresses slowly, and most of the time, people may not notice symptoms. As the stenosis worsens, symptoms may appear and become more conspicuous. Common symptoms include-

  • Chest pain (angina)- This may feel like a pinch, pressure, or discomfort in the stomach, especially during physical activity or internal stress. It may also radiate to the neck, jaw, arms, or stomach.
  • Briefness of breath- This is often worse with exercise but can also occur at rest, especially when lying down.
  • Fatigue- You may feel surprisingly tired and have lower energy to get through the day.
  • Blacking out or flightiness- This may be due to reduced blood inflow to the brain, especially during exercise or unanticipated changes in position.
  • Rapid, fluttering palpitation- This may feel like your heart is pounding in a pall.
  • Repositioned ankles and bases- This is a sign of heart failure and may be a complication of aortic stenosis.

What causes of Aortic Stenosis?

Aortic stenosis can have several contributing factors, but the most common cause is Calcific Aortic Stenosis, which is the most common type. It's caused by the gradational buildup of calcium deposits on the aortic stenosis, which hardens and stiffens, narrowing the opening and confining blood inflow.

Threat factors for this type include-

  • Age- Aortic stenosis is more common in aged people.
  • High Cholesterol- High cholesterol can cause calcium deposits in blood vessels, including the aortic valve.
  • High Blood Pressure- If high blood pressure isn't controlled, it can strain the heart and accelerate wear and tear and gash on the aortic valve.
  • Family history- If a close relation has aortic stenosis, your threat is advanced.

Less common causes of aortic stenosis include-

  • Native aortic stenosis- This is present from birth due to a heart contortion that causes the aortic valve to have only two cusps( bicuspid aortic Valves) rather than the usual three (tricuspid aortic valve).
  • Rheumatic heart disease- Less common in advanced countries due to antibiotics for strep infection. Rheumatic fever can damage the heart valve, including the aortic valve. However, it may be a sign of aortic stenosis if a heart murmur is detected during a medical examination.

How is aortic stenosis diagnosed?

Cardiologists generally diagnose the disease based on symptoms ( if any) and one or further of the following individual tests-

  • Physical test- The doctor will check for swelling in the legs and ankles and may also hear to the heart. With a stethoscope, the doctor can hear a heart murmur, a crucial sign of aortic stenosis.
  • Echocardiogram( echo)
  • Chest x-ray
  • Electrocardiogram( ECG)
  • Stress test
  • Cardiac CT checkup
  • Cardiac MRI

The specific tests a doctor recommends depend on the existing situation and the suspect's reduced flexibility of the aortic valve stenosis.

How do you treat aortic valve stenosis?

Your doctor can only cover your condition with regular consultations and tests. Your doctor can decide the details of your treatment.

If complications similar to high blood pressure or arrhythmia occur:

  • Details of blood pressure (similar to ACE impediments or beta-blockers).
  • Details of treatment for irregular conditions.
