Seema, a 21-year-old young woman, experienced a life-changing medical condition shortly after delivering her first baby. Within just one month of childbirth, she suddenly lost movement and sensation in her body below the chest. She was unable to move her hands and legs properly and even lost control over her bladder and bowel functions. Her condition rapidly worsened, leaving her completely dependent and bedridden.
Concerned about her deteriorating health, Seema’s family looked for help at several hospitals. They finally brought her to Tender Palm Super-Speciality Hospital in Lucknow, where she met Dr. Siddharth, Consultant – Orthopaedics and spine surgeon.
After thorough tests, including X-rays and MRI scans, doctors found that Seema had spinal tuberculosis in the upper thoracic spine (T2–T3 levels). The infection caused pus to build up and badly damaged her spine, which pressed on her spinal cord. This pressure led to her paralysis and loss of body functions.
Realizing how serious her condition was, the medical team planned a complex spine surgery. The operation took about 2 to 3 hours. During surgery, they removed the infected bone and debris, then stabilized her spine with a mesh cage and plates.
A major challenge during surgery was reaching the affected area from the front, which meant carefully working around the chest bone and important blood vessels like the aorta. With special techniques and advanced tools, the team reached the infection and finished the procedure without any problems.
After surgery and with the right anti-tuberculosis medicine, Seema improved a lot. At first, she could not move at all, but within a month, she began to regain strength and movement. She went from being bedridden to standing and walking with help. About 25% of her nerve function came back quickly, and more recovery is expected.
Seema and her family thanked the doctors and staff at Tender Palm Hospital for their dedicated care, effective treatment, and ongoing support during her recovery.
Dr. Siddharth explained that spinal tuberculosis is very serious and should not be ignored, because waiting too long can cause permanent paralysis. He said that surgery is important in severe cases, but finishing the full course of anti-TB medicine is just as important for full recovery.
At Tender Palm Super-Speciality Hospital in Lucknow, advanced spine care and quick treatment are helping patients recover from serious conditions, regain movement, and enjoy a better quality of life.
