Overview

What is Aortic aneurysm in grown-ups?

The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. It carries blood and oxygen from the heart to the rest of the body. It's shaped like a twisted sugar club. The thrusting aorta runs overhead from the heart. The descending aorta runs back down to the tummy. Aneurysms can do in any artery. A weakening of the aortic wall results in an aortic aneurysm. The weak spot in the aorta bulges like a balloon due to the pressure of blood streaming through the artery. This bulge is called an aortic aneurysm.

What kinds of aortic aneurysms are there?

Depending on where they occur in the aorta, aortic aneurysms are divided into two main categories.

  1. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)- is a common type of aortic aneurysm that occurs in the abdominal cavity and affects the lower portion of the aorta. It occurs when the abdominal aorta bulges outward due to a weak area.
  2. Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA)- It affects the upper chest near the heart.

Aortic aneurysms are sometimes called “silent killers” because they tend to grow slowly and without symptoms. In any case, bigger aneurysms or those that develop rapidly may cause risk signs like stomach torment (AAA). A dull or throbbing sensation in the lower back or abdomen that may extend to the buttocks is described as abdominal pain.

  • Chest pain (TAA): In the upper shoulder, back, or chest, you might feel a sudden, sharp, or tearing pain.
  • Inability to breathe: Coughing and shortness of breath may occur if the aneurysm presses on the surrounding airways.
  • Voice shifts (TAA): The aneurysm compressing the nerves may cause hoarseness.
  • Abdominal lump (AAA): A visible or felt palpitating mass in your tummy could indicate a large aneurysm.
  • Feeling full: This can be due to blood inflow changes caused by the aneurysm.

For lower, unruptured aneurysms, your doctor may define specifics to ameliorate blood inflow, lower blood pressure or manage cholesterol. All can help decelerate aneurysm growth and reduce pressure on the artery wall.

Recovery after aortic aneurysm surgery takes at least a month or longer. Your healthcare provider will continue to monitor for any changes in the aneurysm, growth, or complications. Utmost people have positive issues after surgery.
