Arthritis is a general term describing a group of conditions where inflammation occurs in the joints. Several aches, stiffness, and swelling seriously reduce quality of life. The fact that arthritis is such a common disease causing much pain, ascribed mainly to older adults, can affect anyone at any age-even children.

There are many forms of arthritis, with different characteristics. Some of the most common include:

  1. Osteoarthritis: This is the most common form, often referred to as "wear and tear" arthritis. It occurs when the cartilage between the ends of the bones wears away. Aching and stiffness result.
  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis: This is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's tissues, including the joints. It is very inflammatory, very painful, and causes damage to the joint.
  3. Gout: This is arthritis which sometimes results from the buildup of uric acid in the blood, which, in turn, causes it to crystallize and deposit inside the cavities of the joint. This results in sudden, sharp pain.
  4. Psoriatic Arthritis: This is a form of arthritis which appears in people afflicted with psoriasis, a skin condition consisting of red patches covered with white scales. It could lead to joint pain, swelling and stiffness.
  5. Reactive Arthritis: Reactive arthritis occurs after an infection.
  6. Ankylosing Spondylitis: Ankylosing spondylitis is a long-term condition that causes inflammation in the spine and the sacroiliac joints. This can lead to severe pain and stiffness. It causes progressive fusion of the vertebrae, resulting in a rigid spine, and typically begins in early adulthood. The condition can also impact the eyes, heart, and lungs.
  7. Childhood Arthritis: Childhood arthritis includes different types that affect children, causing joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. This autoimmune disorder can lead to growth problems and long-term damage to joints if not managed correctly. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common type.
  8. Infectious Arthritis/Septic arthritis: Septic arthritis is an infection in a joint caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. It causes severe pain, swelling, redness, and symptoms like fever. Fast diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent damage to the joint and serious complications.
  9. Pseudogout: A type of arthritis that mimics gout, pseudogout is caused by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the joints. This condition typically affects the knees and wrists, resulting in sudden, severe pain, swelling, and inflammation. It often presents in older adults and can be triggered by joint surgery, trauma, or changes in metabolic health.
  10. Paget's Disease: A bone disorder involving the abnormal breakdown and formation of bone tissue, Paget's Disease can lead to weakened bones and deformities. It often affects the pelvis, skull, spine, and legs, causing pain, increased warmth in the affected areas, and potential complications such as fractures or arthritis. The exact cause remains unclear, though genetic factors and viral infections may play a role.
  11. DISH (Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis): DISH is characterized by calcification of the anterior longitudinal ligament of the spine, leading to stiffness and limited mobility. While individuals may experience back pain, the condition is often asymptomatic. Unlike ankylosing spondylitis, DISH does not involve significant joint inflammation, distinguishing it as a unique skeletal disorder.
