Overview

The glomerular disease occurs when a disease affects a particular portion of the kidney called the glomeruli. This tiny system of blood arteries serves as the kidney's "cleaning units," filtering waste and eliminating excess fluid from the blood. Glomerular disease occurs when these glomeruli become damaged and cannot perform their work properly.

A variety of diseases can damage glomeruli. Two general phrases are used to characterize the different types of glomerular damage:

Glomerulonephritis is characterized by inflammation and swelling of the glomeruli.
Glomerulosclerosis in which glomeruli become hardened or scarred.

Glomerular disease can impair your kidneys and even cause kidney failure in some cases.
