Overview

Acoustic Neuroma, also known as vestibular schwannoma, is a non-cancerous tumor developing on the Vestibulocochlear nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain and plays a significant role in hearing and balance activities of the individuals. The Acoustic Neuroma (non-cancerous tumor) grows at a slower pace, affecting individuals with particular complications, such as hearing loss, balance issues, and other neurological symptoms, but it can pose more precarious conditions, severe in nature, due to immense pressure exerted on its surrounding regions, including the brain, if not intervened by the medical experts on time.

Symptoms & Causes

Following are the primary symptoms of acoustic Neuroma:-

  • Gradual hearing loss in one ear
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the affected ear)
  • Problems with balance or dizziness
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Facial numbness or tingling (in advanced cases)

Acoustic Neuromas are caused by the overproduction of Schwann cells, which form the protective sheath around the vestibulocochlear nerve, but if there might be any additional factor contributing to the eruption of such a problem has yet not been explored by medical experts. However, a genetic impact identified as Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) is considered to enhance the risk of Acoustic Neuromas.

Diagnosis & Tests

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination, focusing on hearing and balance issues. Tests include:-

  • Hearing test (audiogram) - To assess hearing function.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - The most reliable imaging test for detecting acoustic Neuromas.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scan - Sometimes used if MRI is not possible, though less detailed.

Management & Treatment

Treatment for acoustic Neuroma depends on the size of the tumor, symptoms, and overall health. Options include:-

  • Observation - Small tumors that grow slowly may be monitored with regular MRIs.
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery - A targeted radiation therapy that stops tumor growth without invasive surgery.
  • Surgical removal - For larger or symptomatic tumors, surgery may be necessary to remove the tumor, although there are risks such as hearing loss or facial nerve damage.

Prevention

There are no specific measures to prevent acoustic Neuromas, as most cases are spontaneous. However, early diagnosis and management are crucial for better outcomes.

Outlook/Prognosis

With appropriate treatment, the outlook for acoustic Neuroma is generally favourable. If detected early, it can be managed effectively with minimal complications. However, untreated or large tumors may lead to serious issues such as permanent hearing loss, facial paralysis, or even life-threatening complications.

Living with

Living with acoustic Neuroma can be challenging, particularly if hearing or balance is affected. Regular follow-ups, hearing aids, and physical therapy may help patients adapt. Early intervention and comprehensive care are essential for managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
