Overview

An Aneurysm is a localized bulge or ballooning in the wall of a blood vessel, commonly in arteries. When it occurs in the brain, it is called a cerebral aneurysm, which can lead to severe complications if it ruptures, causing bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). According to medical experts, Aneurysms may erupt in other parts of the body of the individuals, such as the aorta, which can easily be treated by early diagnosis and treatment under the supervision of a doctor, preventing other life-threatening issues.

Symptoms & Causes

Symptoms:-

The symptoms of Aneurysms, though, can't be felt by the affected person unless blood vessels are ruptured. The following are a few symptoms associated with the condition:-

  • Severe headaches (especially sudden or thunderclap-like)
  • Vision problems
  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light

Seizures Ruptured aneurysms present as a medical emergency, leading to intense headaches, loss of consciousness, or neurological deficits.

Causes:-

As already mentioned, the exact causes of aneurysms are not clear, yet the following factors are the common factors triggering the risk of Aneurysms:-

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Trauma or head injury
  • Age (more common in individuals over 40)
  • Infection

Diagnosis & Tests

To diagnose an aneurysm, doctors use several imaging tests:-

  • CT (Computed Tomography) Scan - Provides a detailed view of the brain and can detect bleeding.
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) - Helps visualize the blood vessels.
  • Cerebral Angiography - Involves inserting a catheter into the arteries to visualize aneurysms and detect their size and location.
  • CT Angiography (CTA) or MR Angiography (MRA) - Non-invasive tests to get a closer look at blood vessels.

Management & Treatment

Following are the two treatment options to treat Aneurysms in which their appearance (size & shape) and location (ruptured region) are focused on by the doctors:-

Treatment for aneurysms depends on the size, location, and risk of rupture. The two primary treatment methods include:-

  1. Endovascular Coiling - A minimally invasive procedure where coils are inserted into the aneurysm to prevent blood flow and reduce rupture risk.
  2. Surgical clipping - Open surgery to place a clip around the aneurysm base, cutting off blood flow to the aneurysm and preventing rupture. In emergency cases of rupture, prompt surgery or coiling is needed to control bleeding and prevent further complications.

Prevention

While it’s not always possible to prevent an aneurysm, reducing risk factors helps:-

  • Controlling blood pressure
  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Managing cholesterol levels and atherosclerosis

Outlook/Prognosis

The prognosis of aneurysms depends on early detection and whether or not it has ruptured. An unruptured aneurysm treated in time has a good prognosis, with many patients returning to normal life. A ruptured aneurysm, however, can lead to serious complications, including stroke, long-term neurological damage, or death. Prompt medical care improves the chances of recovery.

Living with

Living with an aneurysm requires close monitoring and follow-up with a neurosurgeon or neurologist. Patients are advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle, manage blood pressure, and avoid activities that may strain the blood vessels, such as heavy lifting. Regular imaging tests may be needed to monitor the condition and assess the effectiveness of treatment.
