Overview

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a non-surgical procedure to unblock your sinuses' openings.

What is functional endoscopic sinus surgery?

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a non-surgical treatment for chronic sinus disease. Physicians use nasal endoscopes — flexible tubes containing light and lenses — to eliminate sinus discomfort without performing cuts inside and around the nose.

Why is it known as functional endoscopic sinus surgery?

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery also is referred to as endoscopic sinus surgery. Providers sometimes refer to the operation as "functional" because what they are doing is restoring the way your sinuses function. When would I require functional endoscopic sinus surgery?

Your doctor will prescribe FESS if you have a chronic sinus infection or inflammation that does not recover using medical therapy, including antibiotics and medications to treat allergies. You become sinusitis when the lining tissue of your sinuses is inflamed, keeping mucus that usually travels through your sinuses and out your nose trapped. The mucus that becomes trapped may form bacteria that cause infection.

What encourages the doctor to recommend a functional endoscopic sinus operation?

The following are the checkups conducted by doctors that help them decide their treatment:-

  • Nasal endoscopy: Your doctor examines your nasal passages and sinuses with an endoscope for infection or inflammation.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan: The test lets your doctor see which areas of your sinuses are involved.

What happens before this procedure?

Your physician will advise you on what to do beforehand. Each individual is different, but most physicians recommend the following:-

  • Stop smoking at least three weeks ahead of your operation if you're a smoker. Smoking will be harmful to your sinus problems. Receive guidance or referrals from your physician to help you with this.
  • Don't take aspirin for at least 10 days before your surgery. Small amounts of aspirin will make you bleed more during and after your surgery.
  • If you have your surgery under general anaesthesia, avoid consuming or drinking any edible product at midnight hours.
  • Your healthcare provider will administer general anaesthesia at the very beginning of your surgery.

How is functional endoscopic surgery done?

FESS is the standard treatment to cure severe sinus conditions. Physicians continue to refine their skills. This is a brief overview of the procedure:-

  • Your physician inserts decongestant medication into your nose.
  • They go in your nose very softly through the endoscope. They insert surgical tools along with the endoscope to use the endoscope so that they can remove bone, insufficient tissue or polyps that are blocking your sinuses.
  • They may also use a tiny spinning burr to remove the tissue.
  • Your doctor can finally pack your nose with material absorbing blood or discharge.

How long is functional endoscopic surgery?

Every case is different, but functional endoscopic surgery usually lasts two hours.

What are FESS for Treatment?

There are potential complications and risks with any surgery. Overall, FESS has fewer complications than most. Your physician will explain possible complications to you, but some that you may encounter are:-

  • You lose your sense of smell. Some people report losing part or all of their sense of smell.
  • Weeping eyes. FESS or sinus infection may cause your eyes to water.
  • Abnormally heavy bleeding. Even though there is little risk of heavy bleeding from FESS, you may bleed more than usual. If so, your doctor may pack your nose and require you to remain in the hospital so physicians can monitor your condition.

It can be a few months before you are back to normal. Most people return to school or work in a week or so and resume their usual routine after two weeks.

Is functional endoscopic sinus surgery effective?

FESS is the most frequently performed surgery for sinus disease. In a study it has been shown that significant number of with chronic sinusitis feel that the medical treatment resolved their condition. But each patient is unique. Your FESS won't "cure" your sinus infection since it's chronic, but FESS will greatly reduce your symptoms and restrict the frequency at which your chronic sinus flares. You can also avoid chronic sinus issues by keeping to your post-operative follow-up care and allowing your nose to heal.

When To Fix Appointment at Hospital?

You need to see your healthcare provider for follow-ups a few weeks following your surgery so that they can rinse your nose and check your healing. You may have other follow-up appointments, depending on your situation.
