Types of Hearing Aids

There are three main types of hearing aids. At Tender Palm, we recommend the best option based on each patient’s needs:

  • In-The-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids
  • Behind-The-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids
  • Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) Hearing Aids

In-The-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids

ITE hearing aids fit inside the ear canal and are custom-made using an impression taken by an audiologist. They are available in different shades to match the outer ear.

Types of ITE hearing aids include:

  • ITE (In-The-Ear)
  • ITC (In-The-Canal)
  • CIC (Completely-In-Canal)
  • IIC (Invisible-In-Canal)

Behind-The-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

BTE hearing aids are worn behind or above the ear, with tubing that sends sound into the ear canal via a custom or universal earmold. They come in various colors for a natural look and are suitable for a wide range of hearing loss levels.

Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) Hearing Aids

RIC aids are similar to BTE devices but have the receiver (speaker) placed directly in the ear canal, connected by a thin wire. They are comfortable, offer great sound quality, and can be used with rechargeable batteries. Wax filters protect the receiver from debris and earwax.

Battery Options

Most ITE and BTE hearing aids use replaceable batteries, which typically last 6 to 15 days depending on size and usage. Modern BTE and RIC models also come with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for added convenience.

How to Choose the Right Hearing Aid?

Choosing the right hearing aid depends on several factors. At Tender Palm, we help guide patients to the most suitable option based on the following:

  • Existing Hearing Aid Users: If the current style is comfortable, it may be upgraded to new technology. However, if hearing loss has changed, a new hearing test is essential.
  • Dexterity Concerns: Small devices like IIC, CIC, and ITE may be hard to manage. BTE or RIC models are easier to handle and maintain.
  • Limited Social Interaction: Homebound or elderly patients may prefer soft earmold BTE hearing aids. Additional assistive devices like flashing doorbells and TV amplifiers can also help.
  • Type of Hearing Loss: Deep canal devices are not suitable for conductive hearing loss. Mixed hearing loss can be managed with customized options.
  • Level of Hearing Loss:
    • Mild to moderate: IIC or CIC aids
    • Moderate to severe: ITC or ITE aids
    • Severe to profound: BTE or RIC aids with ultra-power receivers
  • Sloping Hearing Loss: RIC hearing aids with open domes are ideal for those with better low-frequency hearing and poorer high-frequency hearing.
  • Unilateral Hearing Loss: Individuals with one deaf ear may benefit from BiCROS, CROS, or bone-anchored hearing aids.

Additional Features in Modern Hearing Aids

Today’s hearing aids come with helpful add-ons that enhance the hearing experience:

  • Noise reduction
  • Directional microphones to focus on sound from the front
  • Rechargeable battery options (not available in custom models)
  • Telecoils for better telephone use
  • Wireless connectivity to phones, TVs, and computers via Bluetooth
  • Remote controls for volume and setting adjustments
  • Direct audio input for connecting TVs or computers
  • Multiple programming modes for different listening environments
  • Synchronization for bilateral users, allowing changes on one device to sync with the other
