Overview

Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is an abnormal mess of blood vessels connecting arteries and veins, which disrupts normal blood flow and circulation of oxygen in the brain or spinal cord of individuals spite of being asymptomatic, it can be life-threatening if ruptured, affecting the person with bleeding in his brain, i.e., hemorrhage. Although AVMs can erupt anywhere in the body of individuals, the brain is the part largely affected by the condition.

Symptoms & Causes

Following are the common symptoms of AVMs, the exact cause of which has not been medically confirmed but persisting in infants since fetal or embryonic growth, such a critical condition is believed to affect individuals later on at any age in life.

  • Seizures
  • Headaches (similar to migraines)
  • Muscle weakness or numbness in one part of the body
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding language
  • Vision problems
  • Confusion or difficulty with memory
  • In some cases, the first sign of an AVM is sudden bleeding in the brain, causing a stroke.

Diagnosis & Tests

Diagnosing an AVM typically involves imaging tests to visualize the abnormal blood vessels. These tests include:-

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) - Provides detailed images of brain tissues and blood vessels.
  • CT scan (Computed Tomography) - Helps identify areas of bleeding in the brain.
  • Cerebral Angiography - A specialized procedure that uses X-rays and dye injected into the blood vessels to map the blood flow and detect AVMs.

Management & Treatment

Treatment for AVM depends on its size, location, and the patient's overall health. Options include:-

  • Medication - To manage symptoms such as seizures and headaches.
  • Surgery - Microsurgical resection involves removing the AVM entirely if it is accessible and in a non-critical area.
  • Endovascular Embolization - A catheter is inserted into the abnormal blood vessels to block them off, reducing blood flow to the AVM.
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery - Focused radiation therapy to destroy the AVM over time without invasive surgery.

Prevention

Currently, there are no known methods to prevent AVMs, as their cause is largely genetic or congenital. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to preventing complications such as hemorrhage or stroke.

Outlook/Prognosis

The prognosis of AVMs depends on several factors, including the AVM's size and location, the presence of symptoms, and whether it has ruptured. With proper treatment, many individuals can have good outcomes, although there is a risk of complications like bleeding or stroke even after treatment.

Living with

Living with an AVM requires regular medical check-ups and management of any symptoms. It’s essential to adhere to prescribed medications and to watch for signs of complications such as sudden headaches or neurological changes. Some patients may need long-term rehabilitation for speech, motor skills, or cognitive functions if they have experienced a stroke. Early intervention and ongoing care can improve quality of life for those living with AVM.
