Overview

Scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine which typically affects children and adolescents, out of whom adults are affected by scoliosis due to degenerative changes in the spine which is resolved by the doctors by removing Scoliosis through surgery, that is the only option recommended when the spinal curvature is severe, progresses rapidly, causes severe pain and affects activities. Hence scoliosis surgery is used to rectify the curve, stabilize the spine, and prevent further advancement of the critical problem.

Symptoms & Causes

Symptoms

Following are the symptoms of scoliosis that may vary depending on the severity of the curvature:-

  • Irregular Shoulders/Waist
  • Shoulder blades get random in shape
  • Unequal lengths of Legs
  • The curvature of the spine protrudes
  • Backaches in adults

Causes

Although exact cause or reason of scoliosis is unknown following are a few particular factors contributing in emergence of scoliosis:-

  • Congenital scoliosis - Caused by abnormalities in the vertebrae present at birth.
  • Neuromuscular scoliosis - Associated with neuromuscular problems such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy it also triggers problem of scoliosis.
  • Degenerative scoliosis - It happens due to wear & tear on the spine of individuals.
  • Genetic factors - Family history can play a role in the development of scoliosis.

Diagnosis & Tests

Apart from checking the patient physically the doctors conduct imaging test as well to monitor condition of particular parts of body such as hips, shoulder and waist to check sign of scoliosis:-

  • X-rays - The most common diagnostic tool to confirm scoliosis and measure the degree of spinal curvature.
  • MRI/CT scans - They show if there is any abnormality in spinal cord.
  • Cobb Angle Estimation - It reveals the severity of scoliosis.

The curvature is measured in degrees, and if it exceeds 40-50 degrees, surgery may be considered.

Management & Treatment

If a patient is found with moderate or benign symptoms of curvature then doctors may go for a non-surgical treatment including the following ones:-

  • Bracing - For children and adolescents with a growing spine, a brace can prevent further curvature progression.
  • Physical therapy - It is just akin to physical workout by which physical posture is rectified by strengthening the body parts to provide relief from pain.
  • Pain management - Over-the-counter medications or steroid injections can help manage pain in adults.
  • Surgical intervention becomes necessary when non-surgical options fail, or the curvature is too severe. The most common scoliosis surgery is spinal fusion, which involves:-
    # Realigning the spine as much as possible
     # Fusing the vertebrae using bone grafts to prevent further curvature
     # Inserting metal rods, screws, or hooks to stabilize the spine during healing
    # Surgery can significantly improve the appearance of the spine and relieve symptoms.

Prevention

There is no known way to prevent idiopathic scoliosis, as its exact cause is unclear. However, for conditions that predispose individuals to scoliosis, early detection and regular monitoring can help manage progression. Maintaining good spinal health through proper posture, strengthening exercises, and maintaining a healthy weight may reduce the likelihood of developing scoliosis-related complications in adulthood.

Outlook / Prognosis

The prognosis after scoliosis surgery is generally positive, especially in children and adolescents. With the proper surgical approach, the curvature can be corrected significantly, and further progression is halted. Most patients experience relief from pain and a better quality of life. However, recovery may take several months, and physical therapy is often recommended to aid in rehabilitation.

Adults who undergo scoliosis surgery can also benefit, particularly from pain relief and improved functionality, though their recovery may take longer. Long-term follow-up care is necessary to monitor for any complications or further spinal degeneration.

Living With Scoliosis

Living with scoliosis can be challenging, but with proper management, most individuals lead normal lives. Children and adolescents may face emotional and physical challenges, but support from family, friends, and healthcare providers is essential. Adults may need to adjust activities to avoid excessive strain on the spine, but maintaining an active lifestyle and adhering to treatment plans can greatly improve their quality of life. Regular check-ups and physical therapy can help manage symptoms and prevent further issues from developing.
