Overview

Do you want to update your knowledge about Parotidectomy? Ever have that lump on the side of your ear or jaw that refuses to leave? It may be in your parotid gland, and surgery, medically known as a parotidectomy, could be the solution. It removes some or all of this gland, and although it sounds like something out of a science text, it is frequent. Let's look at what it is, why it is treated, how it is done, and what happens afterwards.

What is the Parotid Gland?

Your parotid gland is one of your salivary glands—large ones in front of your ears, pointing downward toward your jaw. It produces saliva, the goo that keeps your mouth moist and enables you to chew and swallow. Occasionally, a lump—a tumour, cyst, or infection—forms in the gland, and surgeons must remove it.

What Is a Parotidectomy?

A parotidectomy is the removal of the parotid gland, either partially or entirely. When only the skin part (where most lumps occur) is removed, it's superficial parotidectomy. If the entire gland is removed, it's total parotidectomy. The idea is to remove the issue without destroying your face because a large nerve runs through there.

How Is It Done?

It is the step-by-step:-

  • Getting Started: You're given general anaesthesia to sleep through it. The surgeon draws out a cut along your jaw and ear for a clandestine scar.
  • The Incision: They cut along a curved path—beginning close to your ear, arching underneath, and sometimes cutting down your neck a notch.
  • Removing the Gland: The doctor raises the skin and gently moves along the facial nerve (which helps with smiling and blinking). He removes the mass and whatever gland tissue is required to remove, taking care not to touch that nerve.
  • Closing Up: The cut is closed with stitches—dissolvable stitches are used more often—and a bandage or drain (to drain off fluid) might be placed in.

It takes 2–4 hours, and you are in the hospital overnight or for two nights.

Who Is It For?

Parotidectomy is for:-

  • Tumors: They are mostly not cancer (benign), but a few are cancer, so they are removed.
  • Infections or Stones: Swelling or obstruction that keeps returning and would not leave you alone.
  • Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that swell or hurt.

Surgeons initially conduct experiments through medical checkups/tests, including biopsies, to decide what to do.

Advantages of the Procedure

Removing the lump stops pain, swelling, or worry about cancer. If it’s benign, you’re safe. If it’s cancer, this can catch it early. Your face looks normal again once the swelling fades.

Are There Risks?

It’s safe, but watch for:-

  • Facial Weakness: If the nerve gets stretched, your smile might droop—usually temporary.
  • Numbness: The ear or cheek might feel tingly for a while.
  • Sweating: Frey's syndrome is rare, and it causes your cheek to sweat each time you eat, but it is manageable.

They minimize the frequency of these procedures by employing very experienced surgeons.

Recovery Time

You will be swollen and tender for a week or two—pain medication and ice make all the difference. The drain comes out a day or so later, and the sutures dissolve or are removed after 7–10 days. Don't attempt to chew on complex objects or lift heavy things for several weeks. Many are back within 3–4 weeks, although the swelling lasts longer to clear.

Life After a Parotidectomy

Your other salivary glands will produce plenty of saliva, so eating is okay. The scar will eventually be camouflaged into your face. If the nerve is delicate, smiling and blinking are okay. Cancerous ones may require radiation, but most individuals recover.

Does It Work?

Yes, it removes the lump every time. Benign ones are cured; cancerous ones get a head start on treatment.
