What is Stapedotomy?

A surgical procedure called a Stapedotomy is employed in treating otosclerosis, a disorder of abnormal bone growth in the middle ear. Otosclerosis's potential to hold the stapes, an extremely tiny bone, fixed in position could result in hearing loss.

Why is an operation performed?

Following the Stapedotomy surgery, there are specific experiences you are most likely to find yourself going through during the healing process. Some of the likely ones are:-

  • You might experience ear discomfort, pain, or fullness after the procedure.
  • You may be dizzy/vertigo, or unstable immediately after the procedure.
  • • Fluid drainage or discharge from the ear is normal post-procedure.
  • • Temporary muffled hearing or temporary hearing loss is usual.
  • • For a few weeks, you may have to avoid activities that cause pressure changes in the ear, such as strenuous exercise, flying, water exercises, and head baths.
  • • You must visit your doctor to check on healing and have stitches or packing removed.

It's important to follow your doctor's post-op instructions to the letter to heal well and minimize the risk of complications.

How it is done?

Stapedotomy is done by making a tiny hole within the ear canal and entering into the middle ear.

The stapes bone is sliced or excised partially, and a small hole is drilled into the nearby bone. Prosthesis, a little piston, for example, is inserted into the hole and attached to the remaining stapes bone to move quickly and pass sound waves to the inner ear.

What to expect after surgery?

After Stapedotomy surgery, several things can be anticipated in recovery. Some of the vaguest experiences are discussed below:-

  • There should be some ear pain, discomfort, or fullness after surgery.
  • You should expect dizziness/vertigo or unsteadiness shortly after surgery.
  • Drainage or oozing of fluid from the ear following the procedure is normal.
  • Temporary hearing loss or muffled hearing is the rule.
  • You will have to shun activities that cause a pressure change in the ear, including heavy exercise, flight travel, water therapy, and head bath for a few weeks.
  • You will have to see your doctor for follow-up check-ups to adhere to your healing process and get packing or stitches removed.

Stapedotomy is usually an extremely safe and successful surgery, though, like all surgical procedures, some risks and resultant complications may persist. Risks of Stapedotomy include:-

  • Infection is an inherent danger of any surgical procedure, which applies to Stochotomy.
  • Hearing Loss: although a Stochotomy is performed to enhance hearing, loss of hearing is always an improbable possibility, either temporary or permanent, due to the procedure.
  • Balance problem: There may be a problem of balance or vertigo in some patients following the procedure.
  • Perforation: In a few cases, a fresh eardrum perforation or movement of the prosthetic device can require further intervention.
