Overview

What is the coarctation of the aorta?

Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital heart defect that narrows the body's main artery, the aorta, through which blood flows from the heart to the rest of the body. In coarctation of the aorta, this narrowing impedes the passage of blood from the heart into the lower body parts. The heart would have to work much harder to make blood pass around this obstruction, which can eventually lead to cardiac problems.

What are the symptoms of coarctation of the aorta?

The symptoms of coarctation of the aorta may vary depending on the inflexibility of the narrowing. Sometimes, there is no symptom whatsoever. The possible symptoms that may apply include-

  • Elevated blood pressure in the arms and head
  • Lower blood pressure in the lower limbs
  • Weak pulses in the lower limbs
  • Cramping of the lower limbs when exercising
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Lack of energy

What is the cause of aortic coarctation?

However, it is still unknown what causes the aorta to coarct. Its cause, a congenital cardiac abnormality, is known to be an aberrant development of the aorta before birth. We will next discuss our current understanding of implicit causation.

  • Genetics: Although the precise genes are unknown, some genetic disorders, such as Turner syndrome, increase the risk of aortic coarctation.
  • Environmental Factors Unknown: Some risk factors during pregnancy, such as maternal rubella infection or drug use, may be present but have yet to be determined as causing the condition. Coarctation of the aorta can sometimes appear later in life due to
  • Injury: Traumatic injury of the aorta can lead to narrowing.
  • Atherosclerosis: Extensive hardening of the arteries can constrict the aorta.
  • Takayasu Arteritis- Inflammation of the aorta can lead to narrowing.

The maturity of coarctation in aorta cases is congenital.

What are the diagnosis and tests of coarctation of the aorta?

A combination of medical tests with the doctor's examination and the patient's symptoms will be used to detect aortic coarctation. All of these procedures should be carried out:

  • Physical examination: The doctor will listen for any heart murmurs, which are sounds produced by the heart because of abnormal blood flow. He will also listen to the variation of blood pressure in the limbs. Some signs of aortic coarctation include weak pulses or absence of pulses in the legs and increased blood pressure in the arms.
  • CT Scan
  • Chest X-ray
  • Echocardiogram

What is the treatment of coarctation of the aorta?

Coarctation of the aorta is generally treated by two main methods: surgery or cardiac catheterization. The choice depends on several factors, among them the patient's age, flexibility of narrowing, and overall general health. Drugs can be used to control blood pressure both before and sometimes after surgery. Drugs may be used to keep the opening of the ductus arteriosus open and allow the blood flow into the body for infants with severe coarctation until surgery is an option.

Surgery and other methods are considered to be the cornerstones for the treatment of aortic coarctation. The right method likely depends on the facts of the case. There are a few most common techniques:

1) Balloon angioplasty and stenting: This can be done minimally invasively on the aorta with the coarctation while in situ by inserting a catheter into this narrowed aorta from the groin artery. It is expanded with a balloon. A stent, which is a small expandable mesh tube, may also be inserted to keep the artery open.

2) Surgical Repair: There are many surgical techniques to treat aortic coarctation. The most common are:

  • Subclavian deltoid arthroplasty: The patch for enlarging the narrowed aorta is taken from a piece of a closed artery.
  • Bypass graft repair: A synthetic tube graft creates a new route for blood inflow through the narrowed region, bypassing it.
  • Patch arthroplasty: The surgical incision crosses the narrowed segment, and a synthetic patch enlarges the blood vessel. After any repair, a checkup is critical for covering blood pressure and implicit complications throughout life.

Can aortic coarctation be cured?

There is no known treatment to help coarctation of the aorta because it is caused by abnormal tissue before birth. Still, early diagnosis is always the best course. Nonetheless, it may be wise to discuss early diagnosis and successful outcomes with your doctor before pregnancy or for your child if you have a family history of heart defects present at birth or conditions such as Turner syndrome that increase your risk of coarctation.

How can I take care of myself if I have coarctation of the aorta?

Coarctation of the aorta requires your physician to control the disease. Here is what you can do:

  • Follow up on your treatment course: Keep taking your medications as prescribed and attend follow-up sessions to follow up on your blood pressure and other complications.
  • Maintain healthy lifestyle habits
  • Provide a healthy diet and care of stress with regular exercise as your physician recommends.
  • Be aware of symptoms: If you ever experience hypertension, tiredness, or leg pain, you are supposed to report to your doctor immediately.
