What is Deafness?

Deafness, or hearing loss, refers to difficulty in hearing or complete inability to hear. Deafness may be partial or total, and may develop gradually with age or it may develop suddenly. Deafness exists in some people from birth.

What are the symptoms of Deafness?

Especially if hearing loss is occurring gradually, you may find it hard to notice. Nevertheless, below are typical signs that you are going deaf:

  • Requesting that individuals repeat
  • Necessitating that the television is turned up to a high volume
  • Finding it hard to hear individuals, particularly in noisy areas
  • Mumbling of voice
  • Avoidance of engaging in conversation

What causes Deafness?

Deafness can have acquired or congenital causes.

Congenital causes are those that present at birth or soon after. They are linked to difficulties during pregnancy or labor and can be either hereditary or non-hereditary.

At any age, acquired causes can occur as a result of:

  • Tumors or infection
  • Persistent Ear Infections
  • Being around loud noises
  • Growing older
  • Buildup of earwax

How is deafness in childhood diagnosed?

A child with otitis media will frequently have fever, pain in the ears, irritability in pre-verbal children, vomiting and lethargy.

Symptoms which will be detected by a medical specialist include:

The normal middle ear landmarks (handle of malleus, incus, light reflex) are not optimally visible.

The tympanic membrane (TM) is opaque and dull, and can be bulging. The colour of the TM is variable but typically yellow-grey.

In pneumatic otoscopy TM mobility is decreased.

What is the treatment for Deafness?

Occasionally, hearing loss will improve by itself, for instance if earwax is cleaned out or treated with eardrops.

Other deafness, though, is permanent. Treatment for this will seek to enhance whatever hearing you still have. This can be achieved with hearing aids, cochlear implants, or through the education of lip reading or sign language.

Can deafness be prevented?

There are some risk factors that can injure the ear or lead to deafness, so prevention is possible by:

  • Steering clear of loud sounds (e.g. music concerts for extended periods of time, listening to music too loudly)
  • Vaccination of children against measles and meningitis
  • Getting hearing tests done for children
  • Steering clear of certain medicines, if possible
  • Taking precautions if your job involves loud noises and using ear protectors

What will happen if I do have deafness?

That varies depending on your case. Certain hearing loss is reversible, such as hearing loss that occurs due to a cold, swimmer's ear, or something lodged in your ear. Sensorineural and aging hearing loss tends to be irreversible, but hearing aids or cochlear implants can bring back a majority of your hearing.

How do I manage myself?

It can be tough to live with hearing loss, even if you're already getting treatment such as using hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Sometimes you might not be able to hear as well as you want. If that's what happens to you, you might want to inform people that you have hearing loss.

Hearing loss can influence your emotional well-being. Even with treatment, you might become depressed or anxious. If you do, talk to a healthcare provider about how you're feeling.

When should I see my doctor?

Call your doctor if you believe your deafness is worsening. You might need another type of hearing assistance.

What questions should I ask my doctor?

If hearing tests indicate you have hearing loss, you might consider asking your doctor the following:

  • What is causing my hearing loss?
  • How can I improve my hearing?
  • Will my hearing loss worsen?
  • Should I get cochlear implant surgery?
