What is laryngitis?

Laryngitis occurs when the vocal cords or voice box become inflamed due to excessive use, irritation, or infection. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term), lasting less than three weeks.

Numerous conditions cause the inflammation responsible for laryngitis. Viral infections, environmental factors, and bacterial infections can all cause it.

Who can develop laryngitis?

Laryngitis can affect people of all ages. You're more prone to this condition if you:

  • Overuse your voice.
  • Are frequently exposed to tobacco smoke.
  • Are a heavy drinker.
  • Have a respiratory infection, such as bronchitis or sinusitis.
  • People who are immunocompromised or who are on inhaled steroids can be at risk for fungal laryngitis.

What are some common laryngitis symptoms?

Most of the symptoms of laryngitis are short-term and persist for less than two weeks. These common warning signs are:

  • Hoarseness, or soft voice.
  • Loss of voice.
  • Sore throat.
  • Tickling or scratchiness in your throat.
  • Dry cough.
  • Dry throat.

What causes laryngitis?

Laryngitis may happen for many reasons. But laryngitis causes vary based on whether your condition is acute or chronic:

  • Temporary vocal strain is caused by screaming, singing, or talking a lot.
  • Viral infections.
  • Bacterial infections.
  • Candida (yeast) infections.
  • Causes of chronic laryngitis
  • Prolonged overuse of your voice.
  • Chronic sinusitis.
  • GERD (chronic acid reflux disease).
  • Smoking.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption.

How do doctors diagnose laryngitis?

Usually, you can presume you have laryngitis since you will start developing symptoms like hoarseness, sore throat, or dry cough. If these symptoms clear up within two weeks or so, you won't require medical treatment. Where necessary, your doctor can determine if you have laryngitis by:

  • Performing a culture: Your doctor examines your throat and takes a swab. The specimen is then mixed with something to cause the germs to grow. If infecting germs are present, then your culture is positive.
  • Performing a laryngoscopy: A small video camera called an endoscope is put through your mouth or nose so your physician can better view your vocal cords.
  • Having a biopsy: If you have a mass or nodule on your vocal cords, your physician may remove a small tissue sample and send it to a pathology lab for examination.

How is laryngitis treated?

Laryngitis usually goes away within a week or two. The best way to treat laryngitis is to rest your voice and drink plenty of water. Sometimes, your physician may recommend medications to accelerate the healing process.

What medications are used to treat laryngitis?

The medication needed depends on your laryngitis symptoms. Your physician may prescribe:

  • Antibiotics: If a bacterial infection causes the laryngitis, antibiotics can be prescribed by your doctor.
  • Antifungals: You may be prescribed an antifungal if the laryngitis is caused by a yeast or candida infection.
  • Corticosteroids: These are anti-inflammatory and reduce swelling. Your doctor may prescribe these in some cases.
  • Pain relievers: If you have pain from your laryngitis, you can take over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen, naproxen or ibuprofen.

How do I treat my laryngitis?

You can do a few things to relieve symptoms of laryngitis while your body heals. Try the following suggestions:

  • Rest your voice as much as possible.
  • Drink lots of water to keep your throat hydrated.
  • Use a humidifier to ease the dryness of the throat symptoms.
  • Don't whisper.
  • Avoid the use of decongestants, which dry your throat.

Can I prevent laryngitis?

Although you can't always prevent laryngitis, you can do a few things to reduce your risk. For example:

  • Don't smoke: Stay away from tobacco and areas where second hand smoke is common.
  • Eat a healthy diet: Whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables are also good for you. These foods also keep the mucous membranes in the throat healthy.
  • Don't clear your throat: Clearing your throat causes your vocal cords to vibrate abnormally, and swelling can occur and inflame your throat.
  • Don't eat spicy foods: When you eat spicy foods, stomach acid can travel up into the throat, causing, causing heartburn or GERD.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol: Beverages that contain caffeine and alcohol dehydrate your body. If you are dehydrated, laryngitis symptoms may worsen.
  • Drink lots of water: Keeping yourself hydrated thins out the mucous in your throat so it is easy to clear.
  • Wash your hands frequently: To reduce your exposure to germs, wash your hands frequently and avoid people with respiratory infections.

How long will laryngitis last?

Acute laryngitis only lasts a week or two. You may have chronic laryngitis if your symptoms last more than three weeks.

When can I go back to work or school?

Be careful about when to resume normal activities. If your job requires a lot of talking, take a break to recover. You should also avoid work or school if you may be contagious. If you are not sure, talk to your healthcare provider.

When should I see my doctor?

In most cases, laryngitis can be cured with voice rest and the intake of lots of fluids. However, if the symptoms of laryngitis continue for longer than two weeks, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider.

You should seek an appointment with your doctor immediately if your symptoms of laryngitis are also present with:

  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Recurrent fever.
  • Worsening pain.
  • Coughing up blood.

What questions should I ask my doctor?

Discuss your disease with your doctor if you are unsure or have questions or concerns. Here are some questions to ask:

  • Is my laryngitis acute or chronic?
  • Am I contagious?
  • Do I need medicine?
