What is Long QT syndrome?

Long QT syndrome is a heart rhythm disorder that can cause fast heartbeats. These irregular heartbeats can be life-threatening.

The problem lies in the heart's electrical system. It takes longer than normal for the heart to recharge between beats, leading to a prolonged QT interval (seen on an ECG).

What are the symptoms of Long QT Syndrome?

Syncope, or fainting, is the most prevalent symptom of long QT syndrome. There may be little to no warning before an LQTS fainting spell occurs.

The heart beats irregularly for a brief period, which causes fainting. Excessive excitement, anger, fear, or physical exertion can cause fainting. Loud ringtones or alarm clocks are examples of items that can startle someone with LQTS and make them pass out.

Flightiness or dizziness
Breathing difficulty
chest pain
Fits
Abrupt cardiac arrest- This is an issue that could be fatal.

What causes long QT syndrome (LQTS)?

The main cause of long QT syndrome (LQTS) is inheritable abnormalities. The heart takes longer than usual to recharge between heartbeats as a result of certain mutations that impact the electrical system of the heart.

Two primary orders of LQTS exist:

Congenital LQTS heritable- You are born with this type of LQTS. It's caused by changes in DNA that are passed down through families. That means it is inherited.
Acquired long QT syndrome- This type of LQTS is caused by another health condition or medicine. It usually can be reversed when the specific cause is found and treated.

What are the diagnosis and tests for long QT syndrome?

What is the treatment of long QT syndrome?

The main goal of the treatment of long QT syndrome is the prevention of abnormal heart rhythms, along with lowering the risk of sudden cardiac death.

Medications-

Beta-blockers- These are the drugs of choice for most people with LQTS. They slow the heart rate and regulate arrhythmias.
Antiarrhythmic medications- These agents may help control the rhythm of the heart.
Potassium or magnesium supplements- In some instances, such supplements may be necessary to supplement electrolytes.

Devices

The Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator ( ICD)- For those at high risk for sudden cardiac death, an ICD can be implanted to deliver a shock to the heart should it go into an arrhythmia.
Pacemaker- At times, the heart rate may need to be controlled by implanting a pacemaker.

Surgery-

Left Cardiac Sympathetic Denervation (LCSD)- A surgical procedure that removes nerve fibers that control the heart rate.

How can I help long QT syndrome?

There is nothing you can do to prevent it if you inherited the disease from your parents. For persons not born with the condition, however, it is appropriate to contribute to events that result in acquired long QT.
