What are lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are tiny (around 1-2 centimetres in circumference or the size of two AAA batteries placed side by side) kidney- or oval-shaped organs that are part of your immune system. They belong to your lymphatic system, which, together with your spleen, tonsils, and adenoids, assist you in fighting disease and infection. They also remove germs, cancer cells, and wastes from your lymphatic fluid.

You may be able to notice some of your lymph nodes as lumps in your neck, armpits, or groin, but typically only when you have an infection, you're fighting. Typically, you don't notice them or even know they exist.

What are the signs and symptoms of lymphadenopathy?

Lymphadenopathy is a sign that may indicate you have an infection or illness. Your doctor might check your swollen lymph nodes to see what's causing them to swell. They'll check your swollen lymph nodes for:

  • Size.
  • Pain or tenderness when pressed.
  • Consistency (hard or rubbery).
  • Matting (whether they feel connected or move as a group).
  • Location (certain diseases can be associated with where the swollen lymph nodes are in your body).

What are the most frequent reasons for swollen lymph nodes?

The most frequent reason for lymph node swelling in your neck is an upper respiratory infection. These infections take 10 to 14 days to fully recover from. As soon as you feel better, the swelling should decrease too. But it can take a few weeks longer to disappear entirely.

Other viruses and bacteria that might make your lymph nodes swell are:

  • Cold and flu.
  • Sinus infection (sinusitis).
  • Strep throat.
  • Wounds on your skin.
  • Mononucleosis.

Your lymph nodes become larger as more blood cells travel to fend off an infection. They all sort of move in, placing pressure and causing swelling.

Sometimes, the swollen lymph nodes are near the location of the infection. For example, if you have strep throat, you might end up with swollen lymph nodes in your neck.

How to examine for swollen lymph nodes?

To examine for swollen lymph nodes use your fingertips in a slow, circular fashion to check for lumps and sore spots just under your skin on both sides of your body. Examine your neck, in front and behind your ears, above your collarbones, all around the armpit area, and around your groin.

How are swollen lymph nodes treated?

If swollen lymph nodes occur only in a single part of your body, they're referred to as localized swollen lymph nodes. Usually, you just have a virus, so no treatment is really necessary; it will just run its course. The nodes will slowly get smaller again to their regular size.

For certain infections, your doctor may prescribe medication to clear it up.

Generalized swollen lymph nodes indicate you have them in two or more places on your body. It typically indicates a more severe systemic (meaning it's throughout your entire body) disease. They are widespread and can include:

  • Toxoplasmosis.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV or syphilis).
  • Bacterial infections (such as Lyme disease or typhoid fever).
  • Autoimmune conditions (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis).
  • Viral illnesses (such as measles or Epstein-Barr).
  • Cancers (such as lymphoma or leukemia).

These conditions will need more intense treatment over a longer duration of time. Your lymph nodes might not return to their former size until your treatment stops.

What can I do to treat swollen lymph nodes at home?

If you have swollen lymph nodes in your armpits or other areas, you can naturally treat sore and tender lymph nodes. Use a warm compress, such as a microwavable rice sock or similar heating pad. You may also want to take some over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol). These remedies won't shrink your lymph nodes, but they'll help relieve your pain for a little while until your body can fight off the infection or illness.

How are swollen lymph nodes prevented?

You wouldn't want to avoid swollen lymph nodes. They're an indication that your body is fighting an infection or sickness. If you despise the pain of swollen lymph nodes, your best option is to take extra precautions to avoid catching common viruses through the following:

  • Proper hand washing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes and nose.
  • Avoiding people who are sick.
  • Disinfect your home or workplace surfaces.
  • Having enough sleep, healthy eating and exercise.

When should I see a doctor for swollen lymph nodes?

Most swollen lymph nodes are not a problem and will resolve as your infection resolves. Healthcare professionals only tend to be concerned with swollen lymph nodes when they swell for no reason. If you have a large, swollen lump but are not ill and didn't have a recent cold, flu or other infection, visit your healthcare provider. You'll require additional tests, such as blood tests, imaging scans or a biopsy.

In rare instances, inflamed lymph nodes can suggest cancer ― namely, lymphoma (lymphatic system cancer). Other rarer reasons for inflamed lymph nodes are injury, AIDS and cancer that has spread from the lymph nodes to a different area of your body.

Visit your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms that could mean that something more is at hand:

  • Lymph nodes larger than one centimetre in size.
  • Nodes that are extremely painful, hard, fixed to the skin or rapidly enlarging.
  • Nodes that are discharging pus or other material.
  • Symptoms include weight loss, night sweats, persistent fever, shortness of breath or tiredness.
  • Swollen nodes near your elbow, collarbone or lower neck (this usually indicates cancer).
  • Red or inflamed skin over your swollen lymph nodes.
