What is a nasal tumor?

An abnormal growth in your nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses is called a nasal tumor. Both benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous) growths are possible.

Some examples of noncancerous tumors found in the nose include:

  • Nasal polyps.
  • Hemangioma.

Some examples of cancerous nose tumors include:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Adenocarcinoma.
  • Neuroblastoma.
  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • Sarcoma.

Who gets nose tumors?

Anyone may develop nose tumors, but cancerous nasal tumors occur more frequently in individuals over the age of 55. The American Cancer Society states that white individuals residing in the U.S. are far more prone to developing nose tumors compared to those who are Black. Also, men have a double chance of developing nose tumors compared to women.

What are the signs and symptoms of a nose tumor?

Symptoms of a nose tumor include:

  • Chronic nasal congestion or blockage of the sinuses, especially on one side.
  • Loss of the sense of smell (anosmia).
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Headaches.
  • Postnasal drip.
  • Drainage of pus from your nose.
  • Watery eyes.
  • Changes in your voice.
  • Discomfort around your nose, eyes, ears, cheeks or forehead.
  • A growth on your nose, face, neck or mouth.
  • Chronic infections in your ears.
  • Trouble hearing.
  • Eye problems, such as bulging eyes, blurred vision or double vision.
  • Trouble opening your mouth.

What causes nasal tumors?

Nasal tumors develop when the genes that regulate cell growth get hurt or altered. Doctors don't yet know precisely why this happens to these genes.

There are some risk factors, however, that increase your chances of getting nose tumors, including:

  • Tobacco smoke (both direct and secondhand).
  • Wood or leather dust.
  • Vapors are made from a few chemicals and substances, such as glue, radium, solvents, and formaldehyde.

Are there potential complications of not treating nasal tumors?

A malignant tumor of the nose may metastasize or spread to other parts of your body. However, your chance of metastasis is decreased if a medical professional finds the tumor early.

How do you diagnose a nose tumor?

First, a physician will conduct a physical exam and question you about your symptoms. Then they'll suggest your particular case test you. These tests may involve:

  • Nasal endoscopy: During this procedure, a medical professional inserts a thin, flexible tube into your nose that is fitted with a tiny light and camera to examine your sinuses and nasal passages.
  • Blood tests: A small sample of your blood will be drawn by your doctor, who will then test it for cancer in a lab.
  • Imaging Tests: X-rays, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT (computed tomography) scans.
  • Biopsy: In this process, a medical professional will take a small amount of tissue from the tumor. The tissue sample will next be examined in a laboratory.

How are nose tumors treated?

Treatment of a nose tumor varies based on various factors, such as your medical history, whether the tumor is malignant and your preferences. In most cases, doctors suggest surgical excision for nonmalignant nose tumors.

For malignant nasal tumors, the most usual method involves surgery together with radiation therapy.

Surgery

The primary objective of surgery is to eliminate as much of the tumor of the nose as possible. If cancer has invaded adjacent lymph nodes, these also will be removed by a surgeon. Depending on your case, your medical team may consist of oral surgeons, neurosurgeons and ENTs (ear, nose and throat specialists).

Radiation therapy

Your doctor might suggest radiation therapy alone or in combination with surgery. You may have radiation therapy before surgery to shrink the tumor. Or you may have radiation therapy after surgery to destroy any remaining cancer cells. Individuals who can't or don't want to have surgery, can have radiation therapy without surgery.

Chemotherapy

Among the medications used in chemotherapy are those that kill cancer cells. It can be administered intravenously (in a vein) or orally (as pills). For nasal cancers, chemotherapy is less common than radiation therapy or surgery. Your doctor may, however, recommend chemotherapy or chemoradiation (chemotherapy with radiation therapy) in specific circumstances.

Can I avoid nasal tumors?

Nasal tumors cannot be prevented in any way. However, by abstaining from risk factors like smoking and exposure to dangerous gasses, you can reduce your risk. Make sure you wear the right safety gear and take the necessary precautions if your profession involves being around dangerous chemicals or substances.

What will happen if I have a nasal tumor?

If you have a noncancerous nasal tumor, then your doctor will most probably advise surgery to take out the tumor. Noncancerous tumors of the nose usually aren't fatal.

If you have a cancerous nose tumor, your physician will come up with a treatment plan that is unique to your situation. This can involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination of therapies.

Are nasal tumors treatable?

Most cancerous nasal tumors can be treated, provided that the condition is detected in its early stages. Similar to other forms of cancer, the longer the nasal tumor is left undetected, the higher the chances of it developing and spreading.

When should I see my doctor?

Make an appointment with your doctor if you notice symptoms of a nose tumor, such as frequent nosebleeds, loss of sense of smell, or persistent nasal congestion.

What do I ask my doctor?

If you or your loved one just got a diagnosis of a nose tumor, these are some questions you might want to ask your doctor:

  • Is the tumor cancerous or not?
  • Where is the tumor?
  • How large is the tumor?
  • Has it spread?
  • What type of treatment do you suggest?
  • How long will treatment last?
  • How frequently will I have to return for treatment?
  • Will I be able to work or attend school while I receive treatment?
