What is a Neck Abscess?

A neck abscess is an accumulation of pus caused by an infection in the gaps between the neck's tissues. As the amount of pus grows, soft tissue spaces spread and push against neck structures, such as the throat, tongue, and, in extreme cases, the trachea, or windpipe. Neck abscesses may also be known as cervical abscesses or deep neck infections.

There are several forms of neck abscesses in children, including the following:

  • Retropharyngeal abscess: An abscess that usually arises following an upper respiratory infection behind the pharynx, or back of the throat. Children may develop pus when the lymph nodes in this area get inflamed and burst. Retropharyngeal abscesses occur most frequently in young children because these lymph nodes atrophy (shrink) by the time a child enters puberty.
  • Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy abscess): The tissue walls next to the tonsils, which are the lymph organs in the back of the throat, develop an abscess. Adolescents and young adults are more likely to have peritonsillar abscesses than small children.
  • Submandibular abscess (Ludwig's angina): Abscess below the tissues on the floor of the mouth. Pus accumulates under the tongue, elevating it and moving it towards the back of the throat, which produces difficulty with breathing and swallowing. Ludwig's angina is not frequent among young children but can happen in older teenagers, particularly following an infection of the teeth.

What causes a neck abscess?

A bacterial or viral infection of the head or neck, such as a cold, tonsillitis, sinus infection, or otitis media (ear infection), can cause or be the immediate cause of a neck abscess. As an infection becomes more severe, it can migrate downward into the deep tissue spaces of the neck or at the back of the throat. Pus accumulates and forms a mass in these spaces. An infection or inflammation of a congenital (existing at birth) neck mass, such as a branchial cyst or hypoglossal duct cyst, may sometimes result in a neck abscess.

What are the symptoms of a neck abscess?

These are some symptoms that best characterize the presentation of a neck abscess. However, every child is different, and some may exhibit symptoms not mentioned here. Possible symptoms include:

  • Fever.
  • Tongue pushed up against the throat.
  • Stiffness or neck pain.
  • Red, swollen sore throat with unilateral involvement at times.
  • A bulge in the back of the throat.
  • Pain in the ear.
  • Generalized body ache.
  • Chills.
  • Difficulty swallowing, talking, and/or breathing.

Symptoms of an abscess in the neck can be associated with other neck masses or medical problems. Always consult your child's physician for a thorough clinical diagnosis.

How is a neck abscess diagnosed?

A physical examination is usually carried out to make a diagnosis. The following tests may be performed to diagnose a neck abscess in addition to a thorough medical history and physical examination:

  • Throat culture. In order to identify the kind of organism causing an illness, a swab of the back of the throat is taken and examined in a lab.
  • Blood Tests: To measure the body's response to infection.
  • Biopsy: A process that involves taking tissue samples from the body for microscopic inspection, either with a needle or during surgery.
  • X-ray: A diagnostic test that creates images of inside organs, bones, and tissues on film using invisible electromagnetic radiation beams.
  • Computed tomography scan: A diagnostic imaging test that combines X-rays and computer technology to generate horizontal or axial images (often referred to as slices) of the body. A CT scan provides detailed pictures of any region of the body, including bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more precise than standard X-rays.

What are neck abscess treatments?

The following variables will determine how a neck abscess is treated specifically:

  • The age, overall health, and medical history of your child
  • The severity of the illness
  • Tolerance of your child for particular medications, treatments, or procedures
  • Your anticipations on the condition's progression
  • Your selection or inclination

Treatments include:

  • Antibiotic medications (to treat the infection): Your child may need to be admitted to the hospital and receive antibiotics by vein in many circumstances.
  • Drainage of the abscess using a needle: The use of a needle to drain the abscess may necessitate hospitalization.

Your child's doctor will prescribe painkillers and gargling as part of a specific treatment plan for your child's symptoms.
