What is Cardiac Catheterization diagnostic?

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure used to diagnose certain cardiovascular issues. A catheter is a long, thin, flexible tube that is inserted into a blood vessel in the wrist, groin, or neck and connected to the heart.

What is the purpose for Cardiac Catheterization?

The purpose of cardiac catheterization diagnostic:

Examine the following symptoms or validate the diagnosis of a cardiovascular condition:

  • Heart disease
  • Valve illness
  • Aortic conditions
  • Illnesses affecting the cardiac muscle
  • Ailments of the heart valves
  • Assess a condition's development course and choose the most effective line of action.

What is the procedure used in Cardiac Catheterization?

A long, thin, flexible tube known as a catheter is used during diagnostic cardiac catheterization treatments. The catheter is guided by medical imaging using a specialized X-ray scanner. Through the catheter, a dye known as contrast is administered to aid the physician in seeing the heart chambers and blood vessels on the X-ray.

Depending on your symptoms, you may require a cardiac catheterization procedure. Although the methods used for these procedures are largely the same, there are a few minor differences to ensure that the tests correctly identify cardiac problems.

Heart catheterization comes in several forms.

  • Left heart catheterization: This treatment examines the left ventricle's functionality and looks for blockages in the arteries that supply the heart. The artery in your wrist or groin is often where the catheter is first inserted during a left cardiac catheterization.
  • Right heart catheterization: This treatment measures the pressure in your pulmonary artery, the blood flow, and the pressure on the right side of the heart.  A catheter is implanted in your arm, neck, or groin vein. Specialized sensors are integrated into the catheter to assess blood flow and cardiac pressure.

What happened before Left/ Right Cardiac Catheterization?

Avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight the night before the operation. Consume only a tiny amount of water when taking your regular prescriptions. See your doctor for any additional instructions if you have diabetes or take blood thinners. Should you be permitted to go back home, you will be unable to operate a vehicle, therefore someone will need to pick you up from the hospital. If you need to take any extra care once you get home, your cardiologist will let you know.

What happen after Left/ Right Cardiac Catheterization?

You will spend some time lying flat on the bed in the recovery room. A nurse will monitor your vital signs, the location of insertion, and the feeling and circulation in the injured limb. Your doctor will advise you on how long you need to relax in bed, which could range from one to four hours. Your bed rest might be shorter if your doctor installed a closure device. The sheath or introducer may occasionally be left in the insertion site. In that case, your doctor will remove the sheath, and you will be placed on bed rest.

Pain medication can be prescribed for any pain or discomfort resulting from the procedure. All aftercare guidelines must be followed, particularly those about activity, hydration, and diet. The medications or anesthesia you receive will require you to have a ride home from the ASC.
