What is stress echocardiography?

A stress echocardiogram is a diagnostic test that evaluates the health of your blood vessels and your heart. It is sometimes called a stress test or an echo. During a stress echocardiogram, you exercise on a stationary bike or treadmill while your doctor monitors your blood pressure and heart rate.

As you exercise, your doctor takes ultrasound pictures of your heart when it reaches its maximum heart rate to determine if your heart muscle is receiving enough blood and oxygen.

If your doctor believes your chest pain may be due to a heart attack, coronary artery disease, or heart attack, a stress echocardiogram may be recommended.

This test also establishes your safe tolerance for activity if you are receiving cardiac rehabilitation.

The test can also provide information to your doctor on the efficacy of therapies including angioplasty, bypass grafting, and anti-arrhythmic or anti-anginal drugs.

How do I prepare for a stress echocardiography?

This test can take place in a doctor's office or another medical setting, although it normally takes place in an echocardiography laboratory, or echo lab. Typically, it takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Remember the following before taking the test:

  • Don't eat or drink anything 3 to 4 hours before your test.
  • Don't smoke on the day of your test, as nicotine can change your heart rate.
  • Ask your doctor before drinking coffee or taking any medicines that contain caffeine.
  • Ask your doctor if you should take any drugs on the day of the test if you currently take any. Certain heart drugs, including beta-blockers, nitroglycerin, isosorbide-dinitrate, and isosorbide-mononitrate (Isordil Titradose), should not be taken before the test. If you also use medicine for diabetic control, let your doctor know.
  • Put on relaxed, comfy attire. You will be exercising, so wear appropriate running or walking shoes.

When is a stress test using echo conducted?

Exercise stress echocardiograms are the most common method used by medical professionals to identify coronary artery disease. The blockage of blood arteries that supply your heart muscle with oxygen causes this illness.

Stress echo can be used to diagnose or track the state of additional conditions, like:

  • Heart disease.
  • Congenital cardiac problems.
  • Heart breakdown.
  • Heart valve dysfunction.
  • Hypertension in the lungs.

For whom is a stress echo test appropriate?

If you have heart disease symptoms, especially if they worsen with activity, you might be scheduled for this test. These signs include:

  • Chest pressure or pain (angina).
  • Drowsiness or dizziness.
  • A fast or irregular heart rate (arrhythmia).
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea).

The following people may also have a stress echocardiogram:

  • Athletes
  • Those who will soon have surgery
  • Individuals who are subjected to harsh environments, including diving or high altitudes

Who should not have a stress echo test?

If you have any of the following heart problems, getting a stress echo could be dangerous:

  • Dissection of the aorta
  • Inflammation of the heart's surrounding tissues, encompassing endocarditis, myocarditis, and pericarditis
  • Chronic ache in the chest
  • Recently suffered a heart attack
  • Acute stenosis of the aorta
  • Irregular heartbeat

Who performs an exercise stress echocardiogram?

This test is often performed by cardiac sonographers under the guidance of a doctor. This may take place in a hospital or your doctor's office.

How dangerous is it to get a stress echocardiography?

Exercise stress echocardiography is minimally invasive and safe. Underlying heart disease is the main risk. Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) or chest pressure and pain (angina) are two symptoms that can occur when the heart is stressed. During treatment, doctors will constantly monitor the patient for signs of discomfort and will stop treatment if necessary.

What do the results mean?

The results will tell you whether you have heart disease or if your heart is beating normally. Your doctor will discuss your results with you and next steps, including further testing or treatment.
