Overview

Vaccinations during pregnancy help protect both the mother and the baby from serious infections. Some vaccines are safe and recommended in pregnancy, while others should be avoided. It mainly depends on whether the vaccine is live or inactivated.

Are vaccines safe during pregnancy?

  • Inactivated vaccines (vaccines that do not contain live viruses) are generally safe during pregnancy.
  • Live vaccines are usually not advised because they may carry a small risk to the unborn baby.
  • Always discuss vaccinations with your doctor or midwife before taking them.

Vaccines recommended during pregnancy

Flu (Influenza) vaccine

  • During pregnancy, your immune system becomes weaker.
  • This makes pregnant women more likely to get severe flu and complications like pneumonia.
  • The flu vaccine:
    • Reduces your chance of getting flu
    • Makes symptoms milder if you do get flu
    • Helps protect your baby too
  • The flu vaccine is safe and recommended in pregnancy.

Whooping cough (Pertussis) vaccine

  • Whooping cough is very dangerous for newborn babies.
  • Babies usually need hospital care if they catch it early in life.
  • When you take this vaccine during pregnancy:
    • Your body makes protective antibodies
    • These antibodies pass to your baby before birth
  • Best time: Around 20 weeks of pregnancy
  • Can be taken from 16 weeks, and ideally before 32 weeks
  • If missed earlier, it can still be taken later in pregnancy.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) vaccine

  • RSV is a common virus that can cause serious lung infections in babies.
  • It can lead to bronchiolitis and pneumonia, sometimes needing hospital treatment.
  • Getting the RSV vaccine during pregnancy:
    • Passes protection to your baby
    • Reduces the risk of severe RSV for the first 6 months after birth
  • Best time: From 28 weeks of pregnancy
  • Can be given later, even close to delivery if needed.

Vaccines usually NOT advised in pregnancy (Live vaccines)

Live vaccines contain a weakened form of the virus and are usually avoided during pregnancy.

These include:

  • BCG (tuberculosis)
  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
  • Oral typhoid
  • Yellow fever

These vaccines are usually given after delivery, unless the risk of infection is very high. In such cases, your doctor will guide you carefully.
