Vocal cord polyps (also called "vocal fold" polyps by doctors) are rare in children and teens. They are benign (noncancerous) growths or lesions on the surface of the vocal cords.
Vocal cord polyps are easily mistaken for vocal cord nodules since they both tend to develop after habitual misuse of the voice box. Polyps are typically larger than nodules and are more swollen and blister-like (whereas nodules are more callouses-like).
The symptoms and signs of vocal cord polyps or throat polyps are a strained or breathy voice. Polyps must be considered in an individual who was diagnosed with vocal cord nodules that were unresponsive to voice therapy.
Vocal cord polyps are presumed to be a consequence of prolonged voice abuse. Individuals diagnosed with vocal cord nodules that don't improve despite voice therapy probably have polyps.
Laryngopharyngeal reflux (lpr) will also exacerbate symptoms of vocal cord polyps.
The diagnosis of vocal cord polyps is usually made by laryngoscopy or stroboscopy, procedures that examine the voice box while the child is awake. Microlaryngoscopy is usually used.
As polyps are probably caused by chronic abuse and misuse of the voice, we suggest a series of voice therapies to reduce straining.
If there is no response to treatment, and if the voice issue is severe, then surgical excision of the polyps could be advised.
The prognosis for voice patients with polyps of the vocal cords is excellent if voice habits can be altered with therapy. If surgery must be performed, it is wise to heed the post-surgery advice of the voice specialists to prevent voice abuse and straining and achieve the best surgical result possible.
Control of potential allergy and reflux also can decrease inflammation before and following therapy or surgery.
