What is Midwife?

Midwives are doctors who provide complete, family-centered care to women during pregnancy, labor, and after giving birth.

Midwives work in almost all of our sites, and each year they give birth to most of the babies born naturally in our area. Research shows that having a nurse help you during labor and delivery may make it more likely that you will give birth naturally and lessen the need for medical help.

What are the qualifications of a Nurse-Midwife?

Nurse-midwives are trained nurses who have earned at least a master’s degree and have received official certification in midwifery. They are advanced practice doctors who understand both complex medicine and the natural process of pregnancy. While they specialize in natural birth, they work closely with other doctors. If a pregnancy becomes high-risk, they will immediately involve an obstetrician to ensure safety.

Can I see a midwife if I am not pregnant?

Yes. You can visit a midwife for your regular yearly exams, help with birth control, or other gynecological health needs.

How do midwives improve health outcomes?

Nurse-midwives are credited with improving many health statistics. Their care has been shown to lower the rates of infant and mother deaths, premature births, and babies born with a low birth weight. Because of their specialized approach, the number of cesarean sections (C-sections) and surgical procedures like episiotomies is decreasing. Conversely, the number of women successfully having a vaginal birth after a previous C-section is increasing.

These results are particularly significant because 70% of women cared for by nurse-midwives are considered at risk for poor health outcomes due to factors like their race, age, education level, or where they live.

What kind of care do they provide during pregnancy?

During your pregnancy, a midwife can:

  • Provide prenatal care through one-on-one meetings or group visits.
  • Offer emotional support and information to you and your partner.
  • Work with other doctors to create a safety plan in case of complications.
  • Explain different ways to handle labor pain, including options that do not use drugs.
  • Help you understand your birth choices so you can have the experience you want.
  • Build your confidence so you can trust your body during the birthing process.

What do midwives do while I am giving birth?

As you are giving birth, the midwife will:

  • Support you in having a vaginal birth.
  • Suggest helpful changes in position, the use of water (hydrotherapy), and relaxation techniques.
  • Work closely with the team of obstetricians, nurses, and anesthesiologists.
  • Watch for any signs of trouble and call in other doctors if a medical emergency arises.
  • Explain the pros and cons of any suggested treatments for you or your baby.
  • Assist the surgeon if a C-section becomes necessary.

What happens during recovery after the baby is born?

After birth, the midwife will:

  • Encourage immediate breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact between you and your baby.
  • Help you heal physically and support your emotional well-being.
  • Discuss birth control options and help you choose a method that works for your life.

Can I still get pain medicine if I use a midwife?

Yes. Midwives respect and support your personal choices. If you want an epidural or other painkillers to help you feel more comfortable, a midwife can provide them.

Can a midwife help me if I want a vaginal birth after a previous C-section?

Yes. If you have had a C-section in the past and want to try a vaginal birth this time (often called a VBAC), a Certified Nurse-Midwife can provide the expert care and support you need for that process.
