Who is Eligible to Donate a Kidney?
One is eligible to donate a kidney if he/she is fit on the basis of the following specifications:-
Age - The donor should be between 18 to 65 years of age.
Good Health - The donor should be healthy and not suffering from life-threatening ailments such as diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, or heart disease
Normal Kidney Function - The donor should possess normal kidneys and no history of kidney-related diseases.
Voluntary Consent - Donation should be voluntary and not due to compulsion, pressure, money promise, or force.
Legal Relationship - Legally, the donor must be:-
Degree relatives (parent, sibling, child).
Spouse (Wife/Husband).
Relative or emotionally close individual (only after due legal and ethical clearance).
Medical Tests Evaluation
Donor should be provided with a proper medical checkup to ascertain whether kidney donation is feasible. Following tests should be performed:-
General health and matching blood tests.
Tests to verify that both kidneys are working well.
Cross-matching blood and tissue typing (HLA and Cross-match) to confirm recipient compatibility.
Psychiatric interview to confirm donor well understands risks, benefits, and long-term consequences of donation.
