What is VSD closure?

A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a hole in the wall separating the heart's lower chambers (ventricles).

A VSD device closure is a minimally invasive procedure to close this hole using a small, specially designed-device. This device is inserted through a catheter and placed over the VSD, effectively sealing it.

Who performs VSD closure?

A VSD device closure is performed by a cardiologist with expertise in interventional cardiology, a specialized field that focuses on minimally invasive procedures using catheters.

Who needs VSD device closure?

Not all VSDs require closure. Certain tiny VSDs might automatically close. However, VSD device closure may be recommended for patients with:

  • Symptomatic VSDs: Patients experiencing symptoms like difficulty breathing, poor growth, or heart failure.
  • Large VSDs: Larger holes can cause significant blood flow problems and increased lung pressure.
  • VSDs that haven't closed spontaneously: Sometimes, small VSDs may persist and require intervention.

The decision to proceed with VSD device closure is made on an individual basis by a cardiologist, considering the patient's age, size of the VSD, and overall heart health.

What is the procedure and how it is performed for VSD device closure?

If your VSD is moderately sized or larger, your doctor will probably advise plugging the hole to repair the VSD.

There are two primary procedures for fixing a VSD:

Surgery:

Surgically patching a VSD is the most dependable method of closure. A cardiac (heart) surgeon will operate and seal the hole to accomplish this. Depending on size and position, it might only require sewing the hole closed. In other situations, it can entail a synthetic material patch or a tissue graft from your body.

Catheter-based cardiac catheterization techniques use transcatheter to enter the heart through a major artery. The catheter device can insert a specialized tool known as an occluder once it has reached the defect to seal the opening. A mesh framework wrapped with a synthetic substance is usually used to create these gadgets.

In each of the abovementioned scenarios, your cardiac tissue will encircle the patch or occlude device. Eventually, the device or patch should fuse with the heart wall in the space between the ventricles.

If a baby or child is underweight or not developing at the predicted rate, their doctor may suggest extra steps to ensure they get enough nutrients. This could entail using a feeding tube or a specific diet.

What preparations can I make for my child's ventricular septal defect surgery?

Your child's healthcare provider will tell you how to help your child get ready for VSD repair. Nothing to eat or drink, after midnight the night before surgery, do not allow your child anything by mouth. Nothing by mouth (NPO) may also be ordered for your child if he or she is relying on any medication.

Your child's doctor may order additional tests before the surgery. These might include:

  • Chest X-ray
  • An ECG (electrocardiogram) to check on the heart rhythm
  • Others, when the doctor orders: blood tests (to indicate general health)
  • Echocardiogram (echo) to see heart anatomy and blood flow through the heart

What to expect before during VSD device closure?

Discuss with your child’s healthcare provider what to expect from the surgery. In general:

Your child will receive anesthesia before the surgery begins. Typically, it is done intravenously. Your child will certainly undergo a deep, painless sleep at the time of surgery. He/she would not remember it afterwards!

The repair will probably take a few hours to complete.

Surgeon makes a long cut (incision) down the middle of the chest. The sternum needs to be divided so that they can access your heart.

The heart-lung machine will be connected to your child. It is essentially a machine that will replace your child's heart and lungs during the procedure.

To touch the wall, whether septum 1 or septum 2, the surgeon must use one valve of the heart from which he makes a view. The hole on the ventricle is sealed using a dense woven material to close it off.

After the operation, we will take off the heart-lung machine.

The wires will go around your child's breastbone to hold it back together.

The muscle and skin are then closed, and a bandage is applied.

Can I care for my kid at home?

Find out what prescriptions your child needs to fill. After the procedure, your child might need to take specific medications for a while. As required, provide painkillers to your kid.

When they reach home, most kids may resume their regular activities. For a while, though, they might fatigue more readily. Activities that put kids in danger of chest impacts should be avoided.

Your child might need to have sutures removed at a follow-up appointment. Remember to show up for all follow-up appointments.

If your child is experiencing severe symptoms, fever, excessive bleeding or drainage, or swelling, call them to speak with their doctor. It is typical for the site to drain slightly.

Observe any advice your child's doctor gives you regarding medication, physical activity, nutrition, and wound care.

Before several medical and dental treatments, your child may also require antibiotics for a period after the procedure. They may aid in shielding the heart valves from infection.

Additionally, your child may require antibiotics before some medical and dental operations for a period following the procedure. They may be able to stop a heart valve infection.

Your kid will require regular cardiology visits for some time after the treatment. After that, the child will only require periodic visits to a cardiologist. After surgery, most kids may resume their regular lives without limitations on what they can do.
